MAIA is an American poet and essayist, though she considers herself a citizen of no nation, but only a sentient being of the universe at large. This statement is important to help us understand her poems, her ideas. Most of her writing is about controversial themes, easy to understand if we look at some of her titles listed above: every title is a statement, kind of modern Wordsworth. She has a unique style, she says things in a way both direct and frank. Her straightforward lines are meaning being the content more important than form - the form comes as a consequence of the meaning. All of her poems can be read aloud, and be nice to our ears and at the same time she makes us to face our reality, sometimes a crude reality as she sees it.
Maia uses a plain English to reach people of every condition and in all corners of the world, especially those who have English as a second language as those living in countries out of the English world.

And she is not a mere preacher of the good and the evil, but she is also a practitioner of her believing. One of her duties imposed by herself in this earth is to help people providing some of her abilities to master the art of writing, fictional and non fictional stories for free, world wide; especially for people of the emerging countries.

I LOVE it! As a web designer, I have to say it captures your intent beautifully! People raise their consciousness on two major fronts; they either actively pursue it or something cataclysmic happens that forces an unexpected change in perspective. Rarely does it happen any other way. You, however, are a player in both arenas - standing unobtrusively by, offering the bitter medicine that opens passage and allows us to step up another rung on the ladder of spiritual evolvement. A great and courageous undertaking.

[Note: this is from someone whose poem I was asked to critique, after she rewrote it]

You are right, I am thrilled to see the result! I am reading your works this afternoon and found them amazingly inspirational!! It has opened my eyes in some of the most important and dubious issues in life. The integrity and charity that shine through your words, they are great food to the soul...

I have been reading more of your works and it has become one of those things that bring me joy (both intellectual and spiritual) on a daily basis.

This site is a wonderful “marriage” of prose and graphic design. The designer has skillfully captured the mood and message of the writer and incorporated it into a jarring visual emotional display. The writing here is deep, insightful, thought provoking, and expansive.

Everything from the choice of colors, layout, and graphics points back towards the writer’s message distinctly, succinctly, and concisely.
Even though this site is still under construction, the existing links flow well, go where they need to go, and are clearly labeled.

The name of the site, In Medusa’s Mirror, immediately prepares the reader to receive the writer’s primary message: “This is MEDUSA'S MIRROR... as she dares not gaze into one herself, what you will find here reflects what we do not want to see... what would turn our hearts and souls into stone, were we to see all as it truly is... and so, spurning such true sight, we remain blind.”

If I had to use one word to sum up In Medusa’s Mirror, it would be this: compelling.

Just a few:

~ 30-ish male computer tech: “This is trippy shit!”

~ 60-ish ex-commercial fisherman: “...work is wonderful... really socking it to them... a knack for saying the most difficult things and getting away with it.
God bless you, your work, your commitment, your wisdom...”

~ CNN’s Senior Foreign Correspondent, Christiane Amanpour: “...interesting & inspiring material... a most worthy cause. Do hope you continue the good work.”

~ Dwight, retired 38-year LA cop (voracious reader from age 4): “Your words taste good! ...strong medicine everyone needs... some will want to take it in small doses. It hits hard but reads easy- should be very successful.”

~ From students & young professionals (male & female), late teens to early 20’s:

Wow! You touch upon every issue that has seemed to bring our world/race to its demise.

These articles need to be published.

Her work can open eyes and minds.

Anger flows through your words, captures emotions... anger’s what gives these the needed strength.

Short, to the point...captures the essence of all we humans go through & don’t have to.

As a woman, maia holds a much greater/intense power of understanding toward human race.

Why can’t people admit we don’t know everything... we really have messed everything up!

Shove your words into the faces of the stubborn and ignorant!

Dear Mammamaia,

...Your words just rang all kinds of bells for me and I *had* to click on your web site address. I've just spent the past hour reading some of your great essays. I've bookmarked your site in my "favorites" file.

I love your writing style, your clever twists of phrase, your refreshing treatment of tough issues. I'm so glad I happened to "stumble" upon your message among all those on the board, and I happened to notice you'd put your address at the end of the message. Thank you so much. You put into words, much of my concerns and tormenting thoughts these days.

...Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your writing. I look forward to reading much more whenever I can find the time. Thank you for sharing your thoughts -- your wisdom -- so generously. ... I just wish the entire world would read your essays!

Hugs,

- helen

And I have to tell you the introduction to your website sent a shiver down my back.

I had been thinking of how difficult it is to see if you only use your eyes. It seems once we shut down an open heart connection it becomes easier and easier to deceive ourselves - and others - and soon we are 'blind' to life. What is life without the ability to feel 'the other'?

Your site really hit hard with my current musings!! And thanks for making your articles printer version available. I have to read, then reread, most everything nowadays.
